Literature Text

I study her pose , overall shape and form.
Sketch a skeleton of ovals and lines
Her shoulders slope to the right
With her weight. Her arms folded together.
Against my pencil, I measure
And compare model and sketch.
My Eraser fixing the lines.
I study her features, and how they're placed.
I sketch fingers and ears, and place empty eyes.
Her mouth slopes with a smirk, and a dimple
While she squints. I smile myself.
The wind blows a little through her skirt,
And lightly I draw the empty shape
On paper, while my radio plays
"Dark Side of the Moon."

I study the light, the thing
That makes it seem real.
By shadow I suggest
The course of her hair, the gleam
Of Sweat on her nose. Outline her neck
To her collar bone. And just hint of form
Behind her arms, and folds of her shirt.
Play with the shades till it seems to have weight.

She's bored. I think we're done. I try
To get the eyes just right. Biting my lip,
I let her see what my hand says I saw.
In a creative writing class I had to use free verse to "paint a picture." I took the assignment kid of literally.

Never really got free verse.
